The aslope sawn slits create a stack-effect, which makes it nearly impossible for the molasses to drip into the slits.
The article has to be screwed between smokestem and ash plate and works as a catcher of the molasses. So no molasses runs down the smokestem. By the slits inside the catcher, the smoke can pass trough and you can enjoy the taste on and on.
